Compact-Q DEER

Dedicated DEER distance measurements with a cryogen-free magnet, operation from 2 K and weight below 150 kg.

Compact-Q DEER is a 34 GHz pulsed EPR system with a 0–1.5 T field, up to 100 W pulses and a 2–325 K dry insert.

Introduced in 2025, Compact-Q DEER is dedicated to measuring distances between paramagnetic centers by double electron-electron resonance (DEER/PELDOR).

In structural biology, spin labels at known protein positions reveal separations of roughly 1.5–8 nm, helping study conformational changes, oligomerization and domain positions in solution or membranes. Its typical 34 GHz Q-band frequency offers higher DEER sensitivity and better spectral excitation than X-band.

The dry superconducting magnet covers 0–1.5 T without liquid cryogens. Pulsed power reaches 100 W at 5% duty cycle, with a Q-band loop-gap resonator wider than 400 MHz. A built-in dry variable-temperature insert runs from 2 to 325 K; low temperature extends relaxation times for DEER. The system weighs under 150 kg. SpecMan4EPR provides an arbitrary-waveform pulse-sequence engine.
