Microwave-driven electron-to-nucleus polarization boosts solid-state NMR sensitivity by orders of magnitude.

Bruker solid-state DNP-NMR spans 400–900 MHz with 263–593 GHz sources, MAS up to 65 kHz at 100 K and samples near 95–100 K.

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) addresses NMR's low sensitivity. Electron spin polarization is two to three orders of magnitude higher than nuclear polarization; microwave irradiation at the electron paramagnetic resonance frequency transfers it to nuclei. This can reduce experiments from months to hours and enables surfaces, dilute labels, heterogeneous catalysts and membrane proteins in native environments.

Bruker offers 400 MHz with 263 GHz klystron or gyrotron, 600 MHz with 395 GHz gyrotron, 800 MHz with 527 GHz gyrotron and 900 MHz with 593 GHz gyrotron.

Experiments typically run at 95–100 K, with temperature stability within 5–10 K of that range even under difficult conditions. Low temperature supports polarization transfer and longer relaxation times. Wide-bore DNP MAS probes at 100 K support 3.2 mm rotors at 15 kHz (sapphire rotors recommended for microwave transparency), 1.9 mm at 24 kHz, 1.3 mm at 40 kHz and 0.7 mm at 65 kHz. A current AVANCE console and TopSpin integrate gyrotron control, including remote access.
