Nitrogen or air plasma for elemental aerosol analysis outside the laboratory, without argon cylinders.

mipTOF is a field-deployable microwave plasma TOF mass spectrometer for real-time trace-element analysis of aerosols.

mipTOF is a field-deployable time-of-flight mass spectrometer for real-time quantification of trace elements and metals in air. It draws air directly and measures the elemental composition and isotope ratios of aerosol particles down to individual PM0.1, PM2.5 and PM10 particles.

Its MICAP microwave-induced atmospheric plasma runs on nitrogen or ambient air. Unlike conventional ICP-MS, it does not need argon cylinders; gas can be generated on site, so only electrical power is needed. This suits vans, aircraft and mobile monitoring stations.

Volume-based detection limits are 0.01–10 ng/m³ for a 30-second measurement; individual-particle limits are 0.3–60 femtograms. The instrument measures 0.8 × 1.3 × 1.0 m, weighs 195 kg and uses 5.5 kW in operation or less than 0.35 kW in standby.
